Salt preserves meat from corruption and slows its decay; in the same way, as believers, we should hold back the decay and evil in this world. Also, just as salt enhances the taste of certain foods, so we must be as salt, living our lives to bless and enhance the lives of others through Christ who works through us. In Colossians it also refers to our words – we should let our words to others be tasty, palatable, and salve to their wounds. Our words, our salty flavour, should create a thirst in people for the only answer: Jesus.
